FBCCI seeks investment from Brunei

The country's apex trade body requested on Sunday the visiting delegation from Brunei to invest in Bangladesh considering the existing investment-friendly environment here.

"We request you (visiting Brunei delegation) to invest in pharmaceuticals, frozen food, and health service sectors" president of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) Md Shafiul Islam (Mohiuddin) said while discussing with the Bruneian delegation at its board room.

Permanent secretary, ministry of foreign affairs and trade of Brunei Darussalam Siti Norishan Abdul Ghafor led the delegation.

They evinced deep interest to develop the existing bilateral trade with Bangladesh.

The president of FBCCI informed the Bruneian delegation that Bangladesh has developed hugely in infrastructure, communication and some other sectors in the recent years.

He said that Bangladesh achieved consistent gross domestic product (GDP) growth of over 6.0 percent during the last couple of years and above 7.0 percent GDP growth in the past two years.

"Bangladesh is just one step close to be a middle income country by 2021," he said.

The Brunei Economic Development Board on Investment in Brunei Darussalam presented two papers at the meeting.

The Brunei representatives said their country is a potential business hub in Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) region.

Bangladesh mainly exports agricultural products, home textile, plastics and plastic articles, and knitwear etc to Brunei and imports chemical products and polymers of ethylene etc from Brunei.

Bangladesh exported goods worth US $ 1.11 million to Brunei and imported goods worth $ 0.11 million during the fiscal year 2017-18.

Chief Executive Officer, Ghanim International on products and investment opportunities in the halal cluster in Brunei Dr. Nur Rahman, manager foreign direct investment (FDI) promotion/corporate projects of Brunei Firdaus Haji Abd Kadir, FBCCI directors Sharita Millat, Priti Chakraborty, S. M. Shafiuzzaman, Md. Nizam Uddin, Kohinur Islam, Kazi Belayet Hossain and Hafez Harun-Or-Roshid were present.
