CHATTOGRAM, Aug 16: A project has been taken to construct four bypasses and a flyover at five important points on Chattogram-Cox's Bazar highway at a cost of Tk 80 billion (Tk8,000 crore).

A loan agreement has been signed with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to build the bypasses and flyover along the 25km stretch.

Of the total money, the JICA will provide Tk50 billion (Tk5,000 crore).

Of these, Tk 30 billion (Tk3,000 crore) will be spent on land acquisition. This money will come from government fund.

Project Director and Additional Chief Engineer of the Roads and Highways Department Engineer Shyamal Kumar Bhattacharya said, "The project work will start in the middle of next year. The feasibility study of the project has been completed."

After making the detailed design of the infrastructure, tender would be floated in mid-2025 and the project work would begin in 2025, he added.

The points are widening of Patia Bypass (up to 6 lanes), bypass at Dohazari Bazar, construction of a 3.5-km flyover at Keranihat in Satkania, construction of bypasses at Amirabad and Chakaria.

After the construction of the bypasses and the flyover, traffic jams will reduce, public sufferings will ease and the number of road accidents will come down on the highway.

Mr Bhattacharya said, "We've signed a loan agreement with the JICA to construct four bypasses and one flyover at five points on the Chattogram-Cox's Bazar highway."

The government decided to construct four bypasses and one overpass on this highway to handle the heavy traffic of cargo vehicles and tourists heading to Cox's Bazar.

So, the Japanese organisation JICA was providing financial support to the project.
