France, UK, Germany welcome 5G equipment of Huawei

PARIS, May 19 (Reuters): A number of European countries have chosen not to follow the United States' lead in banning Chinese telecom giant Huawei equipment from their markets.

France will allow Huawei, based in Guangzhou, Guangdong province, China, to build its 5G network infrastructure, while preserving national security, French President Emmanuel Macron said in Paris.

It is not in France's best interests to block Huawei, and it is not appropriate to launch a technological war or a trade war, said Macron.

The French president said he believes in cooperation and multilateralism to create jobs, develop businesses, and improve innovation.

Jochen Homann, President of Germany's Federal Network Agency, has said that Germany will not exclude Huawei from building its 5G network.

His agency recently updated network security requirements, and any company that meets the criteria can take part in network building.

Homann added that so far there has been no evidence that Huawei has acted against regulations in Germany.

The United Kingdom has allowed Huawei to help build the "non-core" infrastructure of the country's 5G network.

British telecommunications provider Vodafone already announced it will turn on its 5G service by using Chinese telecoms giant Huawei's technology in the UK on July 3.

The Chinese company is set to release its latest 5G smartphone, the Mate 20 X, next month in the UK.

US President Donald Trump declared a national emergency on Wednesday, adding Huawei to a trade blacklist to restrict its business with US companies.
