FE Report | March 14, 2019 00:00:00

The government is working to prepare an inclusive action plan for sustainable development of cities, Planning Minister MA Mannan said on Wednesday.

The city-dwellers should be involved in the city development activities, he added.

He spoke as the chief guest at a national dissemination workshop on 'Safe and Sustainable Cities: Human Securities, migration and Wellbeing' at Cirdap Auditorium in the city.

The minister said they are facing so many challenges and at the same time there are a lot of prospects in the country. So, they are working to overcome all impediments.

According to the policy brief on the research, more people will be living in urban areas than in rural areas by 2050. Therefore, instead of viewing migrants as a source of urban problems, long-term planning is required to create sustainable cities for all.

It also said learning from experiences of new migrants can lead to more effective and sustainable solutions.

Dr Tasneem Siddiqui, founding chair of RMMRU, moderated the programme.

She stressed the need for ensuring necessary facilities for migrant people coming to cities from rural areas.

It is necessary to recognise their contribution to the city, instead of considering them as a threat, she added.

Enamur Rahman, state minister for disaster management and relief, said they are working on good city management so that cities can remain free from population pressure.

The people who come to Dhaka from rural areas in search of work should get good facilities so that they can perform their duties properly, he added.

The minister spoke at the inaugural session of the workshop attended by officials, experts and academicians.
