Half of population uses internet

Some 317,000 new subscribers started using internet in December last pushing the total users to over 80 million, the state-run Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) said.
The new statistics revealed by the regulator shows that over half of the population is now using internet while mobile-phone users are almost near cent per cent, reports BSS.
The mobile-phone users in December last year stood at 145.1 million, which was 143.1 million in November.
Most of the subscribers use mobile internet and the number was 75 million, while WiMAX subscribers were 89,000 and 5.34 million subscribers use ISP and PSTN internet.
In November last year, the country witnessed the 80 million landmark of internet subscribers followed by 70 million in April.
Of the total mobile phone subscribers, market leader GrammenPhone tops the chart with 65.3 million subscribers, followed by Robi with 42.9 million subscribers, Banglalink 32.3 million subscribers and state-own Teletalk 4.494 million subscribers.
The country recorded the milestone of 140 million mobile-phone users in November last year.
