Int'l engineering confce begins in Ctg today

CHITTAGONG, Jan 11: The two-day international civil engineering conference will begin in the port city tomorrow (Friday).

Southern University Bangladesh (SUB) will organise the civil engineering conference in association with Chittagong centre of the Institution of Engineers Bangladesh (IEB).

Engineers and experts from home and abroad will present research papers in the conference titled 'Research and Innovation in Civil Engineering'.

The research papers will include structural engineering, earthquake engineering, geotechnical and foundation engineering, traffic and transportation engineering, water resources engineering, flood control and mitigation engineering, environmental engineering, materials engineering, construction engineering and management, urbanisation and built environment, and advances in civil engineering education.

Conference secretary Prof Engineer M Ali Ashraf, who is acting vice chancellor and head of civil engineering department of the SUB, has announced the event schedule at a press conference at Chittagong Press Club.

Advisor of the private university Dr Mozammel Huq, founder of the university Prof Sarwar Jahan, associate professors Dr Amrita Das and Dr Bijoy Shankar Barua were present at the press conference.

Former head of civil engineering of IIT, Kharagpur Prof BB Pandey, associate dean of the Chicago State University, America Dr Ali Newaz and Prof of Islamic University of Technology, Gazipur Dr Hossain Md Shaheen, among other scholars, will present keynote papers.

Engr Ali Ashraf said that national and international researchers will present 44 research papers in three keynote sessions and seven technical sessions.

The programme of January 12 will be held at the auditorium of the IEB Chittagong centre and the second day's programme will be held at the SUB at Mehdibag in the city.

University Grants Commission Chairman Prof Abdul Mannan will inaugurate the opening session as the chief guest while SUB VC Prof Nurul Mostafa, IEB Chittagong centre chairman Engr Sadeq Md Chowdhury and SUB founder Prof Sarwar Jahan will address as special guests.

Renowned international water resources expert and Professor Emeritus of Brac University Dr Ainun Nishat will speak as the chief guest in the closing session.
