JS body to summon ex-Biman chairman Jamaluddin

FE Report | September 29, 2017 00:00:00

A parliamentary watchdog on Thursday summoned former chairman of Biman Bangladesh Airlines Jamaluddin and the technical committee members in next meeting.

The probe committee of the parliamentary standing committee on civil aviation and tourism ministry to investigate the reasons behind the grounded aircrafts recommended summoning them.

The decision was made at Thursday's meeting of the Jatiya Sangsad committee chaired by committee chairman Faruk Khan.

The sub-committee submitted a report on leasing of two aircrafts from Egypt Air on 28 July.

Of the two aircrafts, one has been grounded for a long time due to technical fault but it's rent is being paid every month.

The probe committee said that Biman has incurred a loss of over Tk 3.05 billion in three and half years as the purchasing process of two Boeing aircrafts was faulty.

The committee suggested civil aviation and Biman authorities improving the internal management while ensuring transparency.

It was found from a report submitted to the committee that the amount of loss of Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation (BPC) was Tk 32.90 million in 2017-18.

Although the commercial units of BPC are profitable, the excessive expense of head office is the reason for this loss.

It was found that the commercial units earned Tk 967 million and spent Tk 806.96 million. The head office of corporation earned Tk 10.43 million, but spent Tk 203.34 million in last fiscal.
