The final round of the '5th BIAC International Inter-University Arbitration Contest 2024' was held virtually recently, with Kathmandu University, School of Law, Nepal, emerging as the champion.

The competition, organised by the Bangladesh International Arbitration Centre (BIAC), featured the London College of Legal Studies (South), Bangladesh, as the claimant team, and Kathmandu University as the respondent team in the final round.

The London College of Legal Studies (South) secured the runner-up position in the contest, says a press statement.

Eight prominent universities across Asia participated in the competition designed to provide law students with hands-on experience in international arbitration and Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR).

Structured to mirror real-life arbitration proceedings, the contest allowed students to assume the roles of claimant and respondent in a simulated commercial dispute.

The final round was presided over by an esteemed Arbitration Tribunal. The Chairman of the Arbitration Tribunal was A.F.M. Abdur Rahman J., former Justice, High Court Division, Supreme Court of Bangladesh; Senior Advocate, Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh; Barrister-at-Law; and Head of Chambers at Rahman Law Associates & Company.

He was joined by Mohammed Forrukh Rahman, Advocate, Appellate Division, Supreme Court of Bangladesh; Barrister-at-Law; and Head of Chambers at Rahman's Chambers; and Md. Abul Hossain Khan, former Senior District and Sessions Judge; Advocate, High Court Division, Supreme Court of Bangladesh, and Head of Chambers, United Law Chamber.

In his concluding remarks, BIAC Chief Executive Officer K A M Majedur Rahman emphasised the significance of practical legal education in shaping future legal professionals.

"Such platforms are essential for developing the skills and insights required in modern legal practice, particularly in arbitration and ADR, which are increasingly being adopted to resolve commercial disputes efficiently," he stated.

The event was moderated by Mohammad Anisul Haque Emran, Senior Counsel; and Sanjida Sohana, Assistant Counsel at BIAC; with technical and logistical coordination led by Amit Das, Administrative & IT Officer.

BIAC remains committed to fostering a culture of arbitration around the world by equipping the next generation of legal professionals with the tools necessary for effective dispute resolution in the global arena.
