July 16, 2019 00:00:00

Newly-elected chamber leaders of Rangpur called for making faster the process of improving regional connectivity and turning Syedpur Airport an international one to attract foreign investors and boost up the region's promising economy, reports BSS.

Improving regional connectivity and upgrading Syedpur Airport to international one would welcome local and foreign investors in the potential zone, they said.

"Rangpur should be made ready for full activation of the proposed Bangladesh, Bhutan, India and Nepal (BBIN) connectivity," said Mostafa Sohrab Chowdhury Titu, newly-elected President of Rangpur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI).

"Along with capacity building of Syedpur Airport for cargo handling, the work for turning the 139-kolometre Hatikumrul-Rangpur National Highway to six-lane should be expedited," Titu said in a recent talk with the news agency at RCCI office in the northern divisional city.

Agriculture-based Rangpur economy is also very prospective for multi-dimensional agro-based, light engineering and other industries, he observed.

Plenty of huge agro-products as raw materials can attract local and foreign investors to establish agro-based and other industries in the region, he mentioned.

RCCI's Senior Vice President Mostoba Hossain Ripon appreciated the government's initiative for upgrading Syedpur Airport and turning the Hatikumrul-Rangpur National Highway into six-lane one.

Former president of RCCI Md. Abul Kashem said Rangpur has huge prospect of fertiliser and pesticide industries, considering their huge demand in the region for agriculture.

Former vice president of Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) Mostafa Azad Chowdhury Babu also laid emphasis on necessary infrastructure development as the government is going for setting up a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Rangpur.

The IT Park in Rangpur with an aim to create 5,000 jobs would encourage the private investors to launch joint ventures in this sector in the region, Babu hoped.

He also stressed on taking necessary steps to motivate local and foreign investors to come forward to explore potential of Uttara EPZ and five major land ports of the Rangpur region.
