Managing Director of Haq's Bay Automobiles Limited Abdul Haque has been awarded for his key role in making the Mongla Port operational and profitable through importing cars.

President M Abdul Hamid handed over a crest to Mr Haque at a programme, organised on the occasion of 67th founding anniversary of the Mongla Port recently, according to a press statement.

Established in 1950, the Mongla Port had incurred losses since 1990 until 2008, it said.

But at the initiative of Mr. Haque, a foreign ship carrying some 255 Japanese cars arrived at the port on June 3, 2009, giving the country's second port a new lease of life.

The port remains active almost round the year, as most of the car importers have been using the port, the statement said.

As a result, revenue collections from the Mongla Port continue to rise, helping it turn into a profitable one, it added.

Apart from his own business, Mr. Haque is also associated with different national and international organisations.

He is the honorary consul of Djibouti in Bangladesh and the founder and former president of Japan-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JBCCI). He is also the founder and former president of Bangladesh Reconditioned Vehicles Importers and Dealers Association (BARVIDA).
