Most veggie prices up

FE REPORT | October 23, 2021 00:00:00

The prices of most of the seasonal vegetables, chicken and other essential commodities went upwards in Dhaka city's kitchen outlets on Friday.

However, consumers get some sort of relief as onion price has fallen a little bit further at retail level following duty cut amid the ongoing import.

The FE found traders sell a kilogram of broiler between Tk 185 and Tk 190 at Kaptanbazar, Fakirapool, Shantinagar and Jatrabari kitchen markets the same day.

Pakistani Sonali variety sold between Tk 330 and Tk 350 per kilo while red-coloured layer chicken between Tk 220 and Tk 230.

Meanwhile, low-income people aired their frustrations on higher prices of essential commodities.

They said they could not understand how the prices of kitchen commodities remained high despite no supply shortages in the market.

The hard-pressed customers urged the government to take immediate measures, including heightened market monitoring to check further hike in goods prices.

Many of the poor said they have left chicken from their food menu due to higher prices.

"Despite my plan, I couldn't purchase Sonali chicken due to high price," Md Giasuddin, a private job-holder, told the FE at Jatrabari Bazar on the day.

"Like me," he said, "many people in the lower income bracket have left the desire to consume beef and mutton for the reason."

A kilo of local onion variety was traded between Tk 60 and Tk 55 on the day which ranged from Tk 65 to Tk 70 last week.

Indian variety retailed at Tk 45-50 on Friday. It was between Tk 55 and Tk 60 just weeks ago.

On the other hand, ginger was priced between Tk 120 and Tk 140 a kg depending on quality while garlic ranged from Tk 100 to Tk 140.

Two-litre pet bottled soybean oil of different brands sold between Tk 315 and Tk 320. It was at Tk 300-310 weeks ago.

Meanwhile, five-litre soybean was trade at Tk 760 on the day. It was at Tk 700-710 a few days ago.

A litre of loose soybean was selling at Tk 136 on the day against Tk 129 just a couple of weeks ago.
