'Need-based training courses make businesses globally competitive'

Dhaka Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DCCI) is one of the active chambers in Bangladesh and it is working for developing private sector and accelerating the country's economic growth.

DCCI President Osama Taseer said this when addressing the inaugural function of the DCCI Business Institute (DBI)'s international certificate, advanced certificate and diploma courses on supply chain management in the city recently, says a statement.

He said the chamber body is conducting various need-based training courses to make its members and the business community more efficient, trustworthy and competitive globally.

In order to meet the growing demand for training services of the business community, the DCCI Business Institute (DBI) was established in 1991 as a training center and the upgrading done in that year, the chamber leader said.

Apart from providing traditional services to its members, it has been undertaking multifarious activities for private sector development of the country and accelerating economic growth, he mentioned.

"Currently we are working to establish six new faculties at the DBI," he noted.

"The DBI has already received a piece of one bigha land at Purbachal but we are trying to get one acre to establish a permanent campus of DBI," he added.

He congratulated participating organisations, individuals and trainees and guests for joining this programme and wished them all success.

Then he officially declared inauguration of the 25th Batch of Certificate, 24th Batch of Advanced Certificate and 23rd Batch of Diploma Modular Learning System in Supply Chain Management (MLS-SCM) courses.

DCCI Senior Vice President Waqar Ahmad Choudhury and its Acting Secretary and Executive Director of DBI Md. Joynal Abdin were also present, among others, and spoke.

In his speech Waqar Ahmad highlighted the importance of the course and its applicability saying the DBI has expanded its endevour through six new PGD courses of six months long.

The courses are income tax management, custom and VAT management, international trade (import and export management), financial management, marketing management and HRM, he said.

He stressed on ethical and social responsibility of the participants and sought their cooperation to popularise the new courses.

He hoped that these courses will contribute in capacity building of Bangladesh's private sector and improve their performance in competitive global market.

Addressing the programme, Joynal Abdin said effective supply chain management is a must for any business organisation to become competitive both at home and abroad.

All the 18 modules of the course deal with the management of the whole supply chain of a business starting from procurement of raw materials and other inputs up to customer relationship management, he said.

"These modules have been developed by reputed consultants of ITC for capacity building of developing and least developed countries around the world to become competitive and face challenges of globalisation," he mentioned.

"The course is not only beneficial for the company for improving its image, efficiency, competitiveness, profitability and growth by reducing cost of purchasing and lead time, but also for professionals for their career development, he noted.

The courses are equally important for the new entrepreneurs and also enhance the employability of the job seekers, he said, adding the MLS-SCM courses have been conducting by DBI in cooperation with International Trade Centre (ITC), Geneva since 2004.
