Leading shipbuilder of Bangladesh-New Western Marine Shipbuilders Ltd-has handed over two inland passenger ships, Rupsa and Sugandha, to Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) this month.
Each vessel has a capacity of 764 passengers and 44 crew members, making them the largest of their kind in the country, says a press release.
The ships are equipped with modern and luxurious accommodation, including 46 cabins for 92 passengers-four VIP cabins, 27 first-class cabins and 15 second-class cabins-along with second-class chairs for 90 passengers and a passenger deck for 582 travellers.
They will operate on Dhaka-Khulna-Barisal inland river route, with a maximum speed of 12 knots.
