Package VAT to be revised: NBR chief

SYLHET, Apr 20: Chairman of National Board of Revenue (NBR) Md. Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan has said the package VAT system would be revised before the next budget in line with the opinion expressed by different quarters.

He also said that the 15 per cent VAT rate wouldn't be continued for all in the national budget.

"We are working on that and small traders may be exempted (from it). Besides, VAT registration would be done in a day from now on," the NBR chief said while addressing as the chief guest a pre-budget exchange of views meeting in Sylhet.

Sylhet Chamber of Commerce & Industry (SCCI) with the assistance from Customs, Excise & VAT Commissionerate of Sylhet organised the event at a hotel in the north-eastern divisional city on Saturday.

Chaired by SCCI President Khondaker Shiper Ahmed, representatives of trade bodies and businesses from Sunamganj, Habiganj, Moulvibazar and Sylhet districts were present.

Speaking at the programme, the NBR chief urged the friends and families of non-resident Bangladeshis (NRB) to ensure transfer of remittances through banking channel from abroad in order to avert complexities.

He mentioned that the remittance from the NRBs is income tax free.

When his attention was drawn to the existing land registration fees Bhuiyan said the land registration cost in the city areas would be reduced.

He said that a new bank branch would be established in a month at Tamabil Land Customs Station on Sylhet-Meghalaya border. There would be a huge infrastructural development in the area soon, he added.

Commissioner of Customs, Excise & VAT of Sylhet Golam Munir, Commissioner of Taxes Ranjit Kumar Saha, SCCI Vice President Masud Ahmed Chowdhruy and Director Ziaul Haque, Sylhet Women Chamber President Swarnalata Roy, Director of British-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce & Industry (BBCCI) Hijkil Gulzar, Coal Importers' Association President Chandan Saha, and President of the Customs Clearing & Forwarding Agents' Association Bashirul Haque were also present, among others, and spoke.

SCCI Vice President Emdad Hossain conducted the programme.
