Concern Worldwide Bangladesh in partnership with Trickle Up will support ultra poor women in Kurigram to include them in income generating financial activities.

In this regard, the two organisaions launched a three-year programme recently in the capital titled 'Empowering Women and Youth through Graduation and Financial Inclusion', funded by Metlife Foundation, according to a statement.

The programme aims to support 600 families through an adapted graduation approach and increased access to financial services for 12,400 women, and proper utilisation of the services.

This project will work exclusively with women from ultra-poor families in the northern district of Kurigram who are expected to take their first transformative steps to bring them out of ultra-poverty line.

Agriculturist Abdul Hannan, director, field services wing of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), attended the opening ceremony of the project as the chief guest. Representatives of other stakeholders, including government and non-government organisations, were also present.

Addressing the programme, Abdul Hannan said: "With my experience of previous years in Kurigram, I can tell you that, market linkage for the participants in the programme is very much needed."

Selection of right enterprises which are profitable and soft skill training on these activities will help convert the ultra-poor people into productive human resources, he added.

Helen Ware, programme director of Concern Worldwide Bangladesh, and Sayeed Mahmud Riadh, head of programme, Nurul Islam, chairman of MetLife Bangladesh, Nepal and Myanmar, and N Ravindra, director of partnerships and new initiatives of Trickle up, were also present, among others.
