FE REPORT
Agroecological farming was hailed as a sustainable solution for ensuring safe, nutritious and environmentally friendly food, as 'Shuponno' opened its first outlet of such produce at Lalmatia in Dhaka on Friday.
Speakers at the inauguration of the outlet said there is no alternative to consuming chemical-free and nutrient-rich food to ensure a healthy life. Agroecology helps maintain a long-term balance between nature.
They explained that agroecological farming is a science-based system that goes beyond conventional organic agriculture. It relies on natural interactions among biotic, abiotic and physical components of ecosystems, without the use of chemical fertilisers, pesticides or harmful substances.
This approach, they said, preserves soil fertility, biodiversity and natural food chains, while creating a self-regenerating and environmentally sustainable food production system.
Speaking as the chief guest, Fazlul Kader, Managing Director of the Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF), warned that Bangladesh risks long-term agricultural degradation if it fails to adopt agroecological practices.
Agroecology should be seen as "beyond organic" in its capacity to protect both land and livelihoods, he said.
The event was presided over by Joarder Nausher Ali, Chairman of Tilottoma Bangla Group and founder of the Tilottoma Organic Agriculture Farm in Gazipur.
He called on all stakeholders to actively support the movement for safe and sustainable food.
Former Secretary Md Selim Reza, agriculture consultant Dr Mahbubur Rahman and natural food expert Shahid Ahmed were present as special guests.
The speakers also highlighted concerns over rising health risks linked to unsafe, processed and chemically contaminated food in today's fast-paced lifestyle.
They noted that initiatives like Shuponno could help change consumer behaviour by encouraging conscious food choices and healthier diets.
The organisers said Shuponno plans to open more outlets in Dhaka and other parts of the country to make safe, nutritious and chemical-free food accessible to people from all walks of life.
