Appollo Ispat Complex, one of the leading steelmakers of the country, has launched its advanced radiant tube furnace (RTF) super galvanising factory in Narayanganj.
The Tk 2.04 billion project will produce 72,000 tonnes of corrugated and galvanised steel sheets per annum.
Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu inaugurated the environment-friendly plant as the chief guest at a function held at the factory premises at Shimrail at Siddhirganj upazila in the district on Sunday.
Phoenix Group and Apollo Group chairman Deen Mohammad chaired the inaugural ceremony. Lawmaker Golam Dastagir Gazi was present as the special guest.
Speaking on the occasion, Amir Hossain Amu termed the RTF a milestone in technological advancement in industries, saying it is a green/environment-friendly manufacturing plant which will roll out quality products.
"The project has created employment for 200 people. It will provide Tk 1.0 billion (100 crore) to the state exchequer," he said.
"Steel structure is still very popular in European countries but Bangladesh is not using steel expectedly so far. However, use of steel is increasing recently on the infrastructure construction. It is the positive indicator of the country's industrialisation," he observed.
A positive change has already been made in the industry sector, he said, noting the entrepreneurs are being encouraged to make green and environment-friendly products and the creation of new industries is the example of this change.
"The environment-friendly steel and rod are two important items. The quality of two products depends on the raw materials. It is heard that the re-rolling mills are using substandard raw materials. If it is true, then the national security will be hindered," added the minister.
Speaking at the inaugural programme, Deen Mohammad said the annual production capacity of the RTF plant is around 72,000 metric tonnes of corrugated and galvanised sheets.
He said that 750 people are now working at the company.
Appollo Ispat officials said Germany's RTF technology will help the company roll out lead and acid-free corrugated iron sheets in a non-oxidising furnace at its plant.
ESMECH Equipment (Pvt.) Ltd supplied the machine for the plant and the technology is brought from SMS Germany & ESMECH India Joint Venture, according to them.
Appollo Ispat started its journey in 1960 by importing corrugated sheet from USA and Australia. Appollo Steel and Appollo Ispat Complex were established in 1987 and 1994, respectively.
