Internet prices across the board are likely to drop after the Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company (BSCC) announced a 10 per cent reduction in the cost of all types of internet bandwidth, reports bdnews24.com.
The decision was made at a BSCC board meeting on Saturday, the Chief Adviser's Office said in a statement.
The price cut is expected to lower costs for telecom operators and broadband service providers.
Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb, special assistant to the chief adviser on posts, telecommuni-cations, and IT, said the government has taken several initiatives to make internet access more affordable, including a reduction in wholesale prices.
As a result of the latest decision, the price of all bandwidth at the international gateway level will decrease by 10 per cent.
Additionally, telecom companies will be provided with Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) at the backbone level, which will reduce their transmission costs by 39 per cent.
"Discussions have already been held with telecom operators, and it is expected that operators will reduce internet prices at the consumer level by up to 10 per cent," Faiz said.
