Swadhinata Parishad to restore RMG sector's image

BGMEA election

FE Report | March 22, 2019 00:00:00

Swadhinata Parishad on Thursday announced a 12-point election manifesto, with a pledge to restore the tarnished image of the country's readymade garment (RMG) industry at home and abroad.

The new panel is contesting the election of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) scheduled to be held on April 06 for the term 2019-21.

Two panels, Sammilita Parishad and Forum, traditionally compete for the BGMEA leadership while Swadhinata Parishad, formed last year, started campaigning for this election.

A total of 44 candidates are contesting for 26 posts as BGMEA's election board on March 06 announced nine of the trade body's directors in Chattogram as elected unopposed.

"If we are voted to the BGMEA's board of directors, we will develop a roadmap to help entrepreneurs sustain in the business, generate more entrepreneurs for creating new employment," said Jahangir Alam, convenor of the panel, while presenting the manifesto at a views exchange meeting organised by Nabarun Apparels Ltd at Dhaka Club in the city.

The Parishad would set up a research cell in the BGMEA that is expected to work on product diversification for keeping pace with the changing global market, he said.

All the standing committees of the trade body would be made effective to serve its members with trained and skilled manpower.

The panel, if elected, will take initiative to fully digitalise the issuance of utilisation declaration and an app would be developed for subcontracting, Mr. Alam said.

He also promised that they would take initiative to establish a unified code of conduct combining all so that all factories irrespective of their sizes get direct work orders from the buyers.

"We will urge the government to provide 10 per cent cash incentive for the RMG sector," he said.

Our primary victory would be that if election for the director posts is held, he said, adding that they are not worrying about the victory or losing. The leadership should come through the election.

Sammilita Parishad and Forum are jointly contesting the upcoming election.

According to the negotiation of the two traditional panels under the name of Sammilito Forum collectively submitted nominations for 26 posts while Shadhinata Parishad submitted nominations for 18 posts.

Industry insiders, however, said Mohammadi Group Managing Director Rubana Huq, who is leading the joint panel, is going to be the president candidate.
