SYLHET, Mar 09: Commercial establishments in Sylhet city would get Friday as the holiday from now on.

The decision came at a joint meeting between traders and officials on Wednesday.

The Sylhet Chamber of Commerce & Industry (SCCI) organised the meeting in the city with its president Khondaker Shiper Ahmed in the chair.

Deputy Inspector-General of the Directorate of Factories & Industries inspection Himon Kumar Shaha addressed the meeting as chief guest while SCCI vice-presidents Emdad Hossain and Masud Ahmed Chowdhury, director Amiruzzaman Chowdhury, and Sylhet Caterers Association president Salah Uddin Bablu addressed.

The directorate official said that under the labour laws, it is mandatory to keep the shops shut one and a half days in a week.

Since this can't be violated, the agency has to launch drives on holidays in case shops remain open, he said.

However, establishments like food shops, medicine stores, and kitchen markets are beyond the purview.

The meeting decided to keep shops closed on every Friday as weekly holiday.
