The country's industrial units should adopt green technologies to ensure environmental safety, which has become a major concern for sustainable economic growth, speakers said at a programme in the city on Wednesday.
They also underscored the need for conducting research to develop and innovating environment-friendly technologies and materials.
They put forward the suggestions at the launching ceremony of the '15th Dhaka International Yarn & Fabric Show-2019 (Winter Edition)' at International Convention City Bashundhara (ICCB).
Bangladeshi event management company Conference and Exhibition Management Services (CEMS) Ltd. and China's The Sub-Council of Textile Industry (CCPIT TEX) jointly organised the four-day show.
Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi addressed the opening ceremony as the chief guest.
President of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) Md Shafiul Islam (Mohiuddin), Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) President Md Siddiqur Rahman, Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) First Vice President Mansoor Ahmed and President of Centre of Excellence for Bangladesh Apparel Industry (CEBAI) Md Atiqul Islam also spoke on the occasion, among others.
CCPIT TEX Director Shen Zhen and Group Managing Director of CEMS Global Meherun N. Islam also attended the opening ceremony.
Speaking on the occasion, Tipu Munshi said the country's economy has been making a remarkable growth despite some challenges, showing signs of the people's resilience.
"Now we are expecting double digit economic growth in the coming years, for which the apparel sector to play the most vital role in foreign currency earnings," he said.
Appreciating the apparel sector's growth, he expressed the hope that the sector would bring in over US $100 billion from global market by 2024.
However, the fast growing industrialisation should pay attention to environmental issues too, he said.
He expected that the trade fair would help promote environment-friendly machinery and products.
Md. Shafiul Islam said dye and chemical, used by the apparel makers, are pollutant materials.
Mentioning the growing success in innovating green technologies, he said: "We must use improvised method of manufacturing, which depends less on water."
He also said that Bangladesh has been setting an example across the globe by establishing good number of green factories certified by the US Green Building Council (USGBC).
According to the organisers, besides Yarn and fabric show, two other concurrent expos titled '3rd Dhaka Int'l Denim Show 2019 (Winter Edition)' and '35th Dye+Chem Bangladesh 2019 International Expo (Winter Edition)' are taking place at the same venue.
More than 370 businesses from over 22 countries around the world are exhibiting textile yarn, fabrics, raw materials, accessories and related services.
