A gradual decline in arable land, growing population and resource constraints are key challenges for the country to be addressed in order to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Experts came up with this remark at a seminar styled 'The role and steps taken by the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) to achieve SDGs' held at Khamarbari in the city on Tuesday.
They also identified non-availability of proper agricultural data as another barrier to improving the situation.
DAE Director General Mohammed Mohsin chaired the event, while Senior Secretary of agriculture ministry Md Moinuddin Abdullah was present as the chief guest and Additional Secretary Nazrul Islam as special guest.
Speaking on the occasion, Moinuddin Abdullah said it would not be possible to attain sustainable development leaving people behind.
Food production would have to double in order to eradicate all forms of poverty in society and build a hunger-free country, he said, adding that no-one can be safe and secure leaving one hungry in the neighbourhood.
Stressing the need for extensive research for developing the agriculture sector, he called for concerted efforts to achieve the SDGs.
Mohammed Mohsin said that out of the 17 goals and 169 targets of the SDGs, nine goals and 30 targets are linked to the DAE.
The DAE is working towards achieving these goals and targets, he added.
The department has taken various programmes to ensure safe food and nutrition across the country, he said.
Nazrul Islam said arable lands of the country are decreasing and population are increasing day by day, which are posing bigger challenges against the SDGs.
