FE REPORT

Dhaka Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DCCI) President Taskeen Ahmed has called on individuals and businesses to submit their income tax and Value Added Tax (VAT) returns through the e-return process to overcome the existing obstacles in filing tax returns.

He made the remarks while inaugurating a workshop titled 'Personal Income Tax and E-return' organised by DCCI on Saturday.

In his welcome address, Taskeen Ahmed emphasised that paying income tax is a moral responsibility of every citizen and businessman, noting that tax revenues fund vital government initiatives such as infrastructure development, education, healthcare, and various social safety net programmes.

To strengthen the country's economic foundation, the role of income tax and VAT is crucial, he said. "Compared to other countries, Bangladesh's income tax contribution to GDP remains relatively very low. To change this, we must increase the tax-to-GDP ratio."

The DCCI President further stated that the government has been encouraging the citizens to pay their taxes and has introduced e-return system to eliminate existing obstacles in the tax payment process.

He stressed that both individual taxpayers and businesses should use the e-return filing system to pay their taxes.

The workshop featured three technical sessions covering income tax, value added tax (VAT), and e-return.

The sessions were conducted by Lutful Hadee, Proprietor & CEO, Hadee Lutful & Co.; Md. Shafiqul Alam, Director, Bizz Solutions Ltd.; and Snehasish Barua, Partner, Snehasish Mahmud & Co., Chartered Accountants, respectively. The speakers shared in-depth insights on their respective topics.

More than 70 participants from DCCI member firms attended the workshop. DCCI senior vice president Razeev H. Chowdhury and vice president Md. Salem Sulaiman were also present.
