Veg, fish, onion get costlier

FE Report | November 10, 2017 00:00:00

Prices of vegetables, fish and onion increased further at different kitchen markets in the city last week.

Most of the vegetables witnessed a Tk 5-10 rise and sold between Tk 60 (pointed gourd) and Tk 140 (local bean) per kilogramme (kg) in different city markets.

Snake gourd, long bean, okra and brinjal were sold at Tk 80-90, Tk 90-Tk 100, Tk 70-Tk 80 and Tk 70-Tk 90 a kg respectively on Thursday.

Green papaya and eddo were cheaper vegetables sold at Tk 30-Tk 45 a kg in the kitchen markets.

Supply crunch amid low production following waterlogging was blamed for such a hike in vegetable prices, traders said.

Md Saiful Islam, a vegetable trader at Shankar in the city's Dhanmondi area, said prices increased sharply at the Karwan Bazar wholesale market on Thursday morning.

"I bought snake gourd at Tk 350 a palla (5 kg) which was Tk 300 earlier," he said, adding that prices of seasonal bean, cauliflower and cabbage were still higher in the market.

Sheikh Mamun, a vegetable wholesaler at Karwan Bazar, said prices of vegetables are much higher in Rangpur, Bogra, Manikganj, Comilla, Chittagong, Narsingdi and other hubs amid inundation in many places which hampered farming.

"We were buying bitter gourd at Tk 50-Tk 55 a kg from Bogra for last one month against Tk 22-Tk 25 a kg during the same period last year," he said.

He said prices of vegetables might start easing with increasing supply of winter crops at the end of the current month.

Onion prices, however, showed a slight decline on Sunday and traded at Tk 75-80 per kg, but again increased on Wednesday last and sold at Tk 80-Tk 90 a kg.

Prices of riverine fish further increased by Tk 50-Tk 200 a kg or piece.

Shol was sold at Tk 450-Tk 650 a kg depending on their sizes while shing and magur traded at Tk 650-Tk 850 a kg.

Pabda sold at Tk 500-Tk 750, golsha at Tk 500-Tk 650, tengra at Tk 450-Tk 600, and shrimp at Tk 500-950 a kg based on quality and sizes.

Prices of Hilsa also increased by Tk 100-Tk 200 per piece in a week.
