Visa has launched its Visa Payment Passkey (VPP) solution in Bangladesh, introducing a new authentication technology designed to make online payments more secure and seamless.

The global digital payments company is rolling out the service in collaboration with Eastern Bank PLC (EBL) and BRAC Bank, aiming to reduce reliance on traditional one-time passwords (OTPs) while improving the overall digital payment experience for consumers and merchants.

Built on Fast Identity Online (FIDO) standards, Visa Payment Passkey enables users to authenticate online transactions using their device's native unlock methods, such as fingerprint recognition, facial recognition or a PIN. The company said the technology offers a faster and more convenient alternative to OTP-based verification while strengthening transaction security.

"In Bangladesh, where digital commerce is expanding rapidly, authentication continues to be a key friction point in completing online transactions," said Sabbir Ahmed, Country Manager for Bangladesh, Nepal and

Bhutan at Visa.

"Visa Payment Passkey addresses this by enabling a faster, device-based authentication method that enhances both security and convenience. This approach not only simplifies the checkout experience but also has the potential to improve payment success rates, reduce transaction drop-offs, and deliver a more consistent and efficient user experience across digital platforms," he added.

According to Visa, the new solution is expected to improve payment success rates while reducing the number of steps required to complete an online transaction compared with conventional OTP-based authentication.

Consumers need to complete a one-time enrolment to use the service, after which they can enjoy a consistent authentication experience across participating merchants and digital platforms.

The company said the technology is compatible with major operating systems and web browsers and is supported by billions of FIDO-enabled devices worldwide, enabling broad accessibility and scalability.
