Workshop on rice breeding

Participants at the opening session of a two-day workshop on 'Transforming Rice Breeding: Current Status and Way Forward' organised by The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in association with the USAID and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) at the ACI Centre in the city on Sunday

A two-day workshop on 'Transforming Rice Breeding: Current Status and Way Forward' began in the city on Sunday, says a statement.

The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) organised the event in partnership with USAID and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) at the ACI Limited's head office at ACI Centre.

The workshop will be followed by a field visit at Bangladesh Rice Research Institute in Gazipur on November 20.

Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture Md Nasiruzzaman attended the workshop as the chief guest and M Anis Ud Dowla, Chairman of ACI Group, as the special guest.

Roy Fenn of USAID Bangladesh and Dr Gary Atlin of Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation were present as the guests of honour, with Dr. Humnath Bhandari, IRRI Representative for Bangladesh, in the chair.

At the opening session, Dr FH Ansarey, Managing Director and CEO, ACI Agribusiness, demonstrated ACI's solutions for complete rice value chain which comprises R&D, seed, fertiliser, farm machinery, crop protection, rice milling and branding and retailing and communication.

Seven international rice scientists from IRRI and five national scientists from BRRI and ACI have joined the workshop.
