HANOI, Sept 28 (Xinhua): Heavy downpours hit some northern provinces of Vietnam over the past few days, leaving two people dead and seven injured, the country's Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control said on Monday.

Two people in northern Phu Tho province, aged 6 and 37, died in a house collapse while seven from the same locality were injured by the fall of houses' walls, said the committee.

The downpours damaged 73 houses, 267 hectares of rice and 484 hectares of crops, according to the committee, adding that three bridges collapsed, with the landslide volume estimated to be over 16,300 cubic meters.

From Jan. 1 to Sept. 22 this year, natural disasters left 93 people dead or missing and 272 injured in Vietnam, according to the committee.

The disasters, mainly whirlwinds, floods, landslides and downpours, also caused economic losses of about 5 trillion Vietnamese dong (217.4 million U.S. dollars) during the period, said the committee.
