Four people die in Mumbai bldg fire

NEW DELHI, Jan 04 (Xinhua): At least four people were killed and nine others injured early Thursday in a devastating fire in India's financial capital city of Mumbai, police said.

The fire broke out during night in Maimoon building in Marol area.

"Fire broke out in Maimoon building here early today, killing four people and injuring nine others," a police official said. "Brihanmumbai Disaster Management Cell was informed that the fire started at 1:30 a.m. (local time)."

Following the incident, several fighter tenders were rushed to the spot to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading.

Reports said firefighters rescued around 11 people and the injured were rushed to Cooper and Mukund hospitals.

According to officials, it took several hours for the firefighters to bring the fire under control.

The cause of the fire was being ascertained.

The incident comes barely a week after 14 people including 11 women were killed and 20 others injured in a deadly fire at a pub on the terrace of a trade house building in Kamala Mills compound.
