Man seriously injured in Berlin knife attack

BERLIN, Feb 22 (BBC): A 30-year-old man has been seriously injured in a knife attack near Berlin's Holocaust memorial. The incident occurred at about 18:00 local time (17:00 GMT) on Friday, police said, adding an investigation into what happened was ongoing.

The victim - a Spanish tourist - was taken to hospital to undergo surgery after sustaining wounds to his upper body that are not thought to be life threatening. Police have arrested a male suspect, which German media reports is a 19-year-old refugee from Syria.

Officials have not confirmed the identity of the suspect, who is due to appear before a judge on Sunday. It is not clear whether the suspect was known to the victim, while nothing is known of his motive or mental state.

Images showed emergency vehicles and armed police lined along one side of the memorial site. Officers cordoned off the site and were searching the area.
