We all need to compromise to get deal on new EU bosses: Merkel

BRUSSELS, July 02: Everyone will have to make compromises if an agreement is to be reached on how to parcel out top jobs in the European Union, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said upon arriving for the third day of a Brussels summit. "Everyone has to understand that they have to shift a little," she told reporters. "I say that to everyone. Then there will be a chance of reaching a deal. And that is the spirit in which I am going to work - cheerful and determined." Leaders failed to settle on a candidate to head up the bloc's executive Commission after marathon talks that ran through the night on Sunday and well into Monday. — Reuters

UK govt probes civil service over ‘frail’ Corbyn comments

LONDON, July 02: Britain's government said Tuesday it had launched an internal investigation into whether senior civil servants told a newspaper that opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn was "too frail" to be prime minister. "The Cabinet Office (ministry) is investigating this potential breach of the civil service code fully and fairly just as it would any other," said a spokesman for Conservative Prime Minister Theresa May. — AFP

Dalai Lama apologises for comments on women

NEW DELHI, July 02: The Dalai Lama is "deeply sorry" about comments he made about women in a recent BBC interview, his office said in a statement on Tuesday. "(In) responding to a question about whether his own reincarnation could be a woman, and suggesting that if she were she should be attractive, His Holiness genuinely meant no offence. He is deeply sorry that people have been hurt by what he said and offers his sincere apologies," the statement said. — AFP

NASA’s Hubble telescope captures stellar fireworks show

WASHINGTON, July 02: The Hubble Space Telescope has captured an ongoing fireworks show in the universe which started 170 years ago when a doomed super-massive star went through a titanic celestial outburst. The US space agency telescope showed that the hot, expanding gases of the star in a double-star system 7,500 light-years away glowing in red, white and blue, taking the shape of a bipolar ballooning lobes of dust, gas and filaments, according to NASA's press release on Monday. — Xinhua

US lawmaker describes ‘horrifying’ conditions at migrant facility

TEXAS, July 02: Controversy broadsided the embattled US Border Patrol agency Monday, as a high-profile US Congresswoman touring detention facilities called conditions "horrifying" and as current and former agency staffers were alleged to have posted offensive comments about the lawmaker and migrants on a private Facebook page. Migrants held at a border patrol station in Texas were subjected to psychological abuse and told to drink out of toilets, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said after a visit with members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus to the main border patrol facility in El Paso. — Reuters
