Barnier meets UK Brexit negotiators today

BRUSSELS, Mar 04: The EU's chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier will meet Britain's negotiating team on Tuesday, an EU spokesman said, as both sides seek a breakthrough in the thorny Irish border issue. Barnier "will meet tomorrow afternoon" with the UK attorney general Geoffrey Cox and Britain's Brexit minister Stephen Barclay, European Commission spokesman Margaritis Schinas told a regular news briefing on Monday. — AFP

China accuses detained Canadians of spying

BEIJING, Mar 04: China has accused two Canadians of spying, as tensions between the nations grow over the possible extradition of a Huawei executive to the US. Michael Kovrig, a former diplomat, and Michael Spavor, a businessman, were detained in December after Meng Wanzhou was arrested in Canada on suspicion of fraud and breaching sanctions on Iran. Ms Meng is suing Canada over her arrest, which was made at the request of the US. China has condemned Ms Meng's arrest. — BBC

Jordan's king urges more Arab coordination

AMMAN, Mar 04: King Abdullah II of Jordan on Sunday called for increased coordination among the Arab countries to address common challenges, state-run Petra news agency reported. The king made his remarks during his meeting in the capital Amman with heads of Arab parliaments, who are gathering in Amman for their 29th meeting themed "Jerusalem is the eternal capital of Palestine." — Xinhua

UN envoy, Libyan officials discuss developments

TRIPOLI, Mar 04: UN Special Envoy to Libya Ghassan Salame on Sunday met in Tripoli with Fawzi Aqab, second deputy head of the Libyan Higher Council of State (HCS), over the latest political developments in the war-torn country. Salame, Aqab and a number of other HCS officials "also exchanged views on best ways to move the political process forward," said the UN Support Mission in Libya. Libya has been suffering from insecurity and chaos since the fall of the late leader Muammar Gaddafi's regime in 2011. — Xinhua

Medical copter crash in Iran kills five

TEHRAN, Mar 04: An emergency medical helicopter crashed in a southwestern Iranian village on Monday en route to treat a pregnant mother, killing all five people on board, state TV reported. "Following the request to save the life of a 26-year old pregnant mother who needed emergency care … a helicopter was dispatched which unfortunately had an accident," said Pir Hossein Koolivand, who heads Iran's emergency services. "Three crew members and two first aid workers were martyred", he added. — AFP

Algeria's president files candidacy papers

ALGIERS, Mar 04: Hundreds of students took to the streets of Algiers Sunday to denounce President Abdelaziz Bouteflika's bid for a fifth term as he prepared to submit the required documents to be on the ballot. About 10 vans transported Bouteflika's documents to the Constitutional Council, according to an Associated Press reporter at the scene. Bouteflika's campaign chief, Abdelghani Zaalane, was expected to file the president's candidacy papers before making a press statement later Sunday. — AP

French drug suspect faces death penalty

MATARAM, Mar 04: A French man faces execution under Indonesia's strict drug laws after he was caught using a false-bottomed suitcase to smuggle narcotics into the Southeast Asian nation, an official said Monday. Prosecutors have accused Felix Dorfin of trafficking four kilogrammes (8.8 pounds) of cocaine, ecstasy and amphetamines. The 35-year-old from Benthune in northern France was arrested after arriving at Lombok island's airport from Singapore in September. — AFP
