New Delhi asks WhatsApp to
prevent misuse after mob killings
NEW DELHI, July 04: India's government says it has asked WhatsApp to take "immediate action" to prevent the social media platform from being misused to spread rumors and irresponsible statements like those blamed for recent deadly mob attacks in the country. At least 20 people have been killed in mostly rural villages in several Indian states by attacking mobs that had been inflamed by social media. Victims were accused in the viral messages of belonging to gangs trying to abduct children. — AP
Chinese tycoon dies in France fall
PARIS, July 04: The co-founder and chairman of the giant Chinese conglomerate HNA Group has died in a fall in southern France, his company has confirmed. Wang Jian, 57, "accidentally fell" in Provence, while on a business trip to France, a company statement said. Police said he fell off a wall in the village of Bonnieux on Tuesday as he was having his picture taken. — BBC
Zimbabwe army vows

HARARE, July 04: Zimbabwe's military vowed on Wednesday to stay neutral in upcoming elections, dismissing suggestions it would deploy service personnel to influence national polls scheduled for July 30. Firefighters battle major
wildfires in California
LOS ANGELES, July 04: More than 2,000 firefighters battled a massive wildfire in California on Tuesday as authorities warned that record-breaking heat expected by the weekend could spark more blazes. The so-called County Fire in the northern part of the state had scorched 70,000 acres (28,327 hectares) in Napa and Yolo Counties by Tuesday and was just five per cent contained, fire officials said. — AFP
