Two die as car hits children in Japan

TOKYO, May 08: A car slammed into a group of 16 mostly kindergarten children who were strolling on a sidewalk in the lakeside city of Otsu in western Japan, leaving two dead, police said on Wednesday. The accident occurred in the morning after the compact car bumped into another passenger car at an intersection and veered off to the sidewalk, Shiga prefectural police said. — AP

Sharif heads to jail after bail expires

LAHORE, May 08: Pakistan's former prime minister Nawaz Sharif is heading back to prison after six weeks out on bail to receive medical treatment ended. Sharif left his home in Lahore on Tuesday in a convoy of supporters to return to a prison in his hometown. Sharif, who served as the country's premier three times, is a heart patient. — AP

Guatemala prison riot shooting claims seven lives

FRAIJANES, May 08: Gunfire during a riot in a Guatemala prison Tuesday left at least seven inmates dead and 10 wounded, authorities said. National Civil Police said the dead were all prisoners at the Pavon Rehabilitation Model Farm in the municipality of Fraijanes, about 10 miles (17 kilometers) east of Guatemala City. — AP

Venezuela to prosecute MPs

who backed Guaido

CARACAS, May 08: Venezuela will prosecute seven lawmakers who backed last week's failed uprising orchestrated by opposition leader Juan Guaido, the country's Supreme Court ruled on Tuesday, as Washington removed sanctions against Caracas' sacked spy chief for backing the revolt. The court, which announced the ruling in a statement, said it asked Attorney General Tarek William Saab to handle the "criminal investigation" into opposition deputies for "high treason" and "conspiracy." — AFP

Poachers kill British soldier

in Malawi park

LILONGWE, May 08: A British soldier, Matthew Talbot, was killed during counter-poaching operations in southern Malawi's Liwonde National Park, the British High Commission to Malawi confirmed on Tuesday. Talbot, killed on Sunday, was one of the British troops working alongside Malawian park rangers in a counter-poaching capacity building programme. — Xinhua
