Judge halts Trump’s

asylum policy

NEW YORK, Apr 09: A US judge on Monday halted the Trump administration's policy of sending some asylum seekers back across the southern border to wait out their cases in Mexico, stopping a programme the government planned to expand to stem a recent flood of migrants. The ruling is slated to take effect on Friday, according to the order by US District Judge Richard Seeborg in San Francisco. The preliminary injunction will apply nationwide. — Reuters

Dengue claims 12 lives in Honduras

TEGUCIGALPA, Apr 09: At least 12 people have died from severe dengue in Honduras so far this year, said Gustavo Urbina, department chief of arbovirus of the health ministry on Friday. In recent weeks, three new deaths from the disease have been reported, he said. — Xinhua

Board rejects Erdogan’s full vote recount call

ANKARA, Apr 09: Turkey's top electoral authority has rejected a request by the ruling party of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for a full recount of votes in the Istanbul mayoral race. Recep Ozel, a member of the Supreme Electoral Board, said early Tuesday that the electoral authority has, however, allowed a recount of 51 ballot boxes in the city. The board was still to rule on a demand for a re-run of the vote in one Istanbul district. — AP

Brazil’s education minister quits amid tensions

RIO DE JANEIRO, Apr 09: Brazil's education minister is leaving his post after weeks of uncertainty and rumors around his possible firing. President Jair Bolsonaro announced on Twitter Monday that Ricardo Velez Rodriguez will be replaced by Abraham Weintraub. The announcement comes a few days after Velez Rodriguez said that school textbooks would be adjusted to describe the country's 1964-1985 dictatorship as a "democratic regime of force." — AP

Palestinian prisoners start hunger strike

RAMALLAH, Apr 09: Palestinian officials say leaders of prisoners in Israeli jails have launched a hunger strike, demanding better conditions. Qadora Faris, head of Palestinian Prisoners Club, said on Monday that 30 inmates in Israeli jails have refused their meals as part of the strike, and that hundreds more plan to join. The Israel Prison Service says it's prepared for any scenario but that it isn't aware of any mass hunger strike by Palestinian inmates. — AP

Algerian MPs elect new president

ALGIERS, Apr 09: Lawmakers named the speaker of the upper house as Algeria's first new president in two decades on Tuesday, after the resignation of Abdelaziz Bouteflika following mass protests. The election of Abdelkader Bensalah as interim president follows constitutional rules but goes against the demands of demonstrators, who have pushed for him and other top politicians to stand down. — AFP
