11 perish in Maharashtra road mishap

NEW DELHI, Dec 09: At least 11 persons, including seven women and two minors, were killed and three others injured in a road mishap in India's southwestern state of Maharashtra, local media reported on Sunday. The accident happened in the state's Chandrapur district when a truck rammed into a van carrying the victims late on Saturday night. The ill-fated van was carrying 15 passengers on the Korpana-Wani road. A one-year-old minor escaped unhurt, said local media reports. — Xinhua

Armenia votes in snap polls

YEREVAN, Dec 09: Armenians on Sunday were voting in parliamentary elections triggered years ahead of schedule by reformist leader Nikol Pashinyan, who is aiming to cement his political authority in the post-Soviet country. The 43-year-old former journalist became prime minister in May after spearheading weeks of peaceful anti-government rallies that ousted veteran leader Serzh Sarkisian. He has pledged to root out endemic corruption and address widespread poverty. — AFP

Six die in Philippine traffic accident

MANILA, Dec 09: A truck carrying metal bearings had slammed into vehicles and a bakery in Laguna province south of Manila, leaving at least six people killed and 14 injured, local police said on Sunday. Police said the 10-wheeler truck was going downhill on a highway in the town of Santa Rosa around 11:30 pm local time on Saturday when it lost control and plowed into the vehicles and crashed into the bakery. According to the police, among the dead were two girls aged one year old and two years old respectively. — Xinhua

Iran arrests 10 over suicide attack

TEHRAN, Dec 00: Iranian police said on Sunday that 10 people had been arrested in connection with a suicide attack in southeastern Iran that killed two police officers. Jihadist separatist group Ansar al-Furqan has claimed responsibility for Thursday's assault in which an explosives-laden car was driven into a police station in the port city of Chabahar. The authorities have rejected the claim of responsibility for the attack. — AFP
