Syrian IS fighters hiding in

underground tunnels

BAGHOUZ, Mar 11: A spokesman for the US-backed Syrian forces fighting the Islamic State group says they've made "limited advances" in the latest push on the last remaining area held by the extremists in Syria. Mustafa Bali of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces says there were still IS militants in the besieged village of Baghouz on Monday, mainly hiding in underground tunnels. — AP

Clashes break out in Yemen's

key port city after ceasefire

SANNA, Mar 11: Fighting erupted in Yemen's key port city of Hodeida on Sunday, the first significant clashes since warring sides agreed to a UN-brokered cease-fire deal in December, security officials and eyewitnesses said. Fires burned on the main front lines in the city's east and south, while exchanges of artillery fire shook buildings in combat that broke out overnight, they said. — AP

RIYADH, Mar 11: The trial of Loujain al-Hathloul, one of nearly a dozen prominent Saudi Arabian women's rights activists jailed since last year, will begin on Wednesday, her family has said. HOHHOT, Mar 11: Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, lying at the forefront of China's fight against desertification, has mobilized 76.6 million volunteers to plant trees over the past seven years, local authorities said on Monday. GAZA CITY, Mar 11: A Palestinian wounded last month during clashes on the Israel-Gaza border succumbed to his wounds on Monday, the health ministry in the Palestinian enclave said. A spokesman for the ministry said in a statement "Bissam Safi, 22, died this morning". He said he had been hit in the head with a tear gas cannister on February 22 during protests and clashes near Khan Yunis in southern Gaza.—AFP

Three troops, 46 militants die in Sinai

CAIRO, Mar 11: Egypt says three troops and 46 suspected Islamic militants have been killed in recent days in the northern and central Sinai Peninsula. There were no details on the circumstances that led to the casualties in Sinai. The military also said in its statement on Monday that Egyptian forces destroyed 15 hideouts, and dismantled 204 explosive devices. — AP

Nicaragua opposition leaves

MANAGUA, Mar 11: The opposition Civic Alliance said Sunday that it will not return to talks with Nicaragua's government unless President Daniel Ortega's administration makes goodwill gestures like freeing prisoners. ISLAMABAD, Mar 11: Taliban founder Mullah Omar lived within walking distance of US bases in Afghanistan for years, according to a new book that highlights embarrassing failures of American intelligence. Washington believed the one-eyed, fugitive leader had fled to Pakistan, but the new biography says Omar was in fact living just three miles from a major US base.—AFP
