Gunmen attack Catholic church in Burkina Faso

OUAGADOUGOU, May 13: Authorities say gunmen have attacked a Catholic church in Burkina Faso, killing a priest and five worshippers. The attack on Sunday took place in Dablo, about 200 kilometers (124 miles) from the capital, Ouagadougou. Urbain Kabore, a government spokesman for the West African country's Sahel region, said the gunmen also set fire to a health center and destroyed all places serving alcohol. — AP

Heavy defeat for Macri coalition in key province

BUENOS AIRES, May 13: The ruling coalition of Argentine President Mauricio Macri suffered a heavy defeat Sunday in elections held in Cordoba province, the country's second most populous district. Peronist governor Juan Schiaretti led comfortably after 94.2 percent of the vote had been counted, claiming 54 percent of ballots cast in his bid for re- election. — AFP

US issues security alert on Iraq amid tensions

BAGHDAD, May 13: The US embassy in Iraq has issued a security alert, warning US citizens of "heightened tensions" in Iraq and advising against travel there. The advisory warning was posted on Twitter on Sunday night. It comes at a time of rising tensions in the Middle East between the United States and Iran. The warning follows a surprise visit to Baghdad by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo which he said was aimed at demonstrating US support for the Iraqi government, as the US says it has been picking up intelligence that Iran is threatening American interests in the Middle East. — AP

Sweden reopens Assange rape probe

LONDON, May 13: Swedish prosecutors have reopened an investigation into a rape allegation made against Wikileaks co-founder Julian Assange in 2010. The inquiry has been revived at the request of the alleged victim's lawyer. Assange, who denies the charges, has avoided extradition to Sweden for seven years after seeking refuge at the Ecuadorean embassy in London in 2012. The 47-year-old was evicted last month and sentenced to 50 weeks in jail for breaching his bail conditions. He is currently being held at Belmarsh prison in London. —BBC

Somalia uses DNA to convict rapists

MOGADISHU, May 13: Somalia has for the first time used DNA evidence to obtain a criminal conviction, sentencing three men to death Sunday for the gang-rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl, the Bureau of Forensic Science said. The country got its first-ever forensic laboratory in 2017 in the semiautonomous state of Puntland, seeking to tackle widespread sexual violence in a country where two decades of conflict and turmoil have put justice out of reach for most. — AFP
