36 missing after boat sinks in Congo river
KINSHASA, Sept 15: Thirty-six people are missing after a boat sank in the Congo river on the outskirts of Kinshasa, DR Congo police said on Sunday. The vessel, which was travelling to the capital, went down overnight in Maluku commune, about 100 kilometres (62 miles) from the centre of the city. Seventy-six people survived, police wrote on Twitter. — AFP
Egypt sends aid to S Sudan to support peace
CAIRO, Sept 15: Egypt sent aid shipments to Juba as part of its efforts to support the implementation of the 2018 peace agreement in South Sudan, Egyptian Foreign Ministry said on Saturday. Three shipments of aid, including medicine, tents and military uniforms, were sent to Juba consecutively on Sept. 11, 12 and 13, the ministry said in a statement. — Xinhua
Large forest fire blazing near Athens
ATHENS, Sept 15: A force of over 160 firefighters on Sunday battled to contain a large fire near Athens blazing for a second day amid gale force winds, officials said. The fire department said the blaze burned in the mountains above Loutraki, a coastal resort some 62 kilometres (39 miles) west of Athens. "The fire is burning near the top of the mountain," Stefanos Kolokouris, the fire department's deputy chief of operations, told state TV ERT. — AFP
Storm moves away from Bahamas
MIAMI, Sept 15: Gusty winds from Tropical Storm Humberto are still affecting portions of the northwestern Bahamas, which is struggling to recover from Hurricane Dorian. The U.S. National Hurricane Center expects Humberto to strengthen into a hurricane later Sunday or Sunday night, moving "well offshore of the east coast of Florida during the next day or so" before moving away from the U.S. — AP
Road accident kills seven in western Russia
MOSCOW, Sept 15: Seven people have been killed in a bus-truck collision in the Yaroslavl region in the west of Russia on Saturday, the regional office of the Russian Emergencies Ministry said. The accident occurred at 10:45 a.m. Moscow time (0745 GMT) when a bus collided with a truck on a highway in the region, 350 km north of Moscow, according to a statement by the ministry. As a result of the accident, seven people were killed and another 28 were injured, the statement said. —Xinhua
Saudi coalition launches probe into drone attacks
RIYADH, Sept 15: Saudi-led coalition involved in a war in Yemen announced on Saturday the launching of a probe into the drone attacks against oil facilities in the east of Saudi Arabia. Saudi Interior Minister announced that drone attacks caused fires at two oil facilities of Saudi petroleum company Aramco. The attacks hit the two sites in Abqaiq and Khurais areas. — AFP
