Barbara Bush in failing health

TEXAS, Apr 16: Barbara Bush, the wife of former US President George HW Bush, is in "failing health" and has decided to no longer seek medical treatment, the office of the ex-president said in a statement from Houston on Sunday. The former first lady, who is also the mother of former President George W Bush, "will instead focus on comfort care," the statement said. She is 92 years old. Her husband, the 41st US president, is 93 years old. Her son, the 43rd US president, is 71. — Reuters

S Korea's Park won't appeal jail term

SEOUL, Apr 16: South Korea's disgraced former president Park Geun-hye will not appeal her 24-year prison sentence for corruption, reports said Monday. Park (66), who was removed from office over a massive corruption scandal last year, was convicted of multiple criminal charges including bribery and abuse of power at a trial earlier this month. She has boycotted all court hearings since October, claiming unfair treatment. — AFP

Bus collision claims 18 lives in Ghana

ACCRA, Apr 16: Eighteen people were killed and about 70 others injured when a passenger bus collided with two other vehicles early Sunday in northern Ghana, police said. The bus was trying to overtake other vehicles at the time of the crash, said Mohammed Tanko, assistant superintendent of Northern Regional Police. The crash occurred near Tamale, capital of the Northern Region. — Xinhua

5.4-magnitude quake hits Philippines

MANILA, Apr 16: An earthquake of 5.4-magnitude hit Cagayan province in northern Philippine main Luzon island on Monday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said. In a report, the Phivolcs said the quake struck at 3:43 am local time, 39 km east of Gonzaga town with a depth of 23 km. The institute said the tremor was also felt in Santiago City in Isabela province and Laoag City in Ilocos Norte. — Xinhua
