Car bomb kills two Afghan security officers

KABUL, Oct 16: An Afghan official says that at least two security officers have been killed when a car bomb detonated near a district headquarters in eastern Laghman province. Asadullah Dawlatzai, spokesman for the provincial governor, says that 26 people including 20 children and six security forces were wounded in Wednesday's attack in Alishing district. He says the wounded children were inside a nearby mosque where they were studying the Quran. — AP

Felicity Huffman starts serving prison time

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct 16: "Desperate Housewives" star Felicity Huffman - aka inmate No. 77806-112 - reported Tuesday to a federal prison in California to serve a two-week sentence in a college admissions scandal that underscored the lengths some wealthy parents will go to get their children into top universities. Huffman's husband, actor William H. Macy, dropped her off at the Federal Correctional Institution, Dublin, a low-security prison for women in the San Francisco Bay Area, according to TASC Group, which represents Huffman.— AP

China sets air quality target for Beijing

BEIJING, Oct 16: Chinese authorities on Wednesday released an action plan for air pollution control in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and nearby areas, setting specific targets for the autumn and winter season. The average density of PM2.5, fine particulate matter that causes smog, should drop by 4 percent from Oct. 1, 2019 to March 31, 2020, compared with the same period last year. — Xinhua

‘People of Hong Kong' nominated for Nobel Peace Prize

OSLO, Oct 16: A Norwegian politician has nominated the "people of Hong Kong" for the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize, in a move which risks drawing China's ire. "I have nominated the people of Hong Kong, who risk their lives and security every day to stand up for freedom of speech and basic democracy, to the Nobel Peace Prize for 2020," Guri Melby, a member of Norway's parliament for the liberal party, said in a Twitter post on Tuesday. — AFP

Two ethnic Serb police officers held over killing

PRISTINA, Oct 16: Kosovo police say they have arrested two ethnic Serb police officers over the slaying of a moderate Serb politician almost two years ago. Police spokesman Baki Kelani said the two were arrested early Wednesday on suspicion of involvement in the killing of Oliver Ivanovic, who was gunned down on Jan. 16, 2018. — AP
