'Fire and Fury' to become TV series

LOS ANGELES, Jan 18: "Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House"-the tell-all President Donald Trump has said is "full of lies"-is to be adapted for television, US media reported Wednesday. Rights to Michael Wolff's book, an explosive behind-the-scenes account that questions the president's fitness for office, have been snapped up by Endeavor Content, according to The Hollywood Reporter and Variety. They said Wolff would be executive producer of the series. Trump has declared the book "phony". — AFP

Japan launches Epsilon-3

TOKYO, Jan 18: Japan's space agency successfully launched its Epsilon-3 small rocket from the Uchinoura Space Center in Kagoshima Prefecture in southern Japan on Thursday morning. The rocket is carrying an Earth observation satellite. The satellite, ASNARO-2, has been developed by Japanese electronics firm NEC and is the first payload from the private sector to be carried by the small rocket. According to the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), following the launch at 6:06 a.m. local time, the rocket put ASNARO-2 into orbit 500 km above the Earth just before 7:00 a.m. local time. — Xinhua

Forces kill eight militants in Kunduz

KUNDUZ, Afghanistan, Jan 18: At least eight militants, loyal to the Taliban group, were killed and six others wounded, following a series of Afghan forces operations in the country's northern province of Kunduz, a local official said Thursday. The operation was launched in Nahr-e-Sufi village of the troubled Chardara district on Wednesday night and lasted for several hours leaving eight insurgents dead, Ghulam Hazrat Karimi, the spokesman of Pamir 20 Army Corps in the northern region, told Xinhua. Six more insurgents sustained injuries, he added. Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban purported spokesman in contact with media confirmed the clash, claiming 11 government soldiers were killed in the incident, a claim rebuffed by Karimi as groundless. — Xinhua

Cambodian PM vows to hold election on schedule

PHNOM PENH, Jan 18: Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen reiterated on Thursday that the national election will be held on schedule on July 29 and its result does not need international recognition. "There is no any change to the schedule. No matter what will happen, this election must be conducted at any cost," he said in a public speech at the Peace Palace. Hun Sen said under the kingdom's constitution, the election result does not require recognition from presidents of other countries or from the United Nations Secretary General to be legitimate. — Xinhua
