Legendary boxer to run for Philippines president

MANILA, Sept 19: Philippine boxer-turned-politician Manny Pacquiao declared Sunday he will run for president in 2022, ending months of speculation about whether the legendary fighter would seek the country's top job. "The time is now-we are ready to rise to the challenge of leadership," said Pacquiao, as he accepted the nomination of a rival faction in President Rodrigo Duterte's ruling party. — AFP

Turkey sees 221 more Covid deaths

ANKARA, Sept 19: Turkey on Saturday confirmed 26,161 new COVID-19 cases, raising its tally of infections to 6,820,861, according to its health ministry. The death toll from the virus in Turkey rose by 221 to 61,361, while 24,023 more people recovered in the last 24 hours. A total of 335,244 tests were conducted over the past day, it said. — Xinhua

Car crash kills Johannesburg mayor

JOHANNESBURG, Sept 19: South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa has paid tribute to the new mayor of Johannesburg, following his death in a car crash aged 46. Jolidee Matongo had been campaigning with Mr Ramaphosa before the vehicle accident happened. Details are sketchy, but local media have shown images of the front of a car badly smashed up. — BBC

Singer joins Mamata's party

NEW DELHI, Sept 19: Popular Bollywood singer Babul Supriyo joined Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's ruling Trinamool Congress party in the eastern Indian state on Saturday, barely two months after he was dropped as a federal Minister by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. — AP
