US may use conflict in Middle East to start World War III: Lukashenko

MINSK, Aug 09: Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko warns that the United States may use the conflict in the Middle East to start a new world war. "God forbid, they may use the conflict situation in the Middle East to unleash a new world war. They are ready to go that far," the BelTA news agency quotes Lukashenko as saying at a meeting with the CIS interior ministers. Sudan govt delegation to consult with US on ceasefire talks

KHARTOUM, Aug 09: The Sudanese government said on Friday it will send a delegation to Jeddah to consult with the United States regarding an invitation to ceasefire talks in Geneva to be held on August 14. The talks aim to end a 15-month-old war between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary. The Geneva talks, which the RSF has agreed to attend, would be the first major attempt in months to mediate between the two warring sides in Sudan. — Arab News

Magnitude-5.3 earthquake hits Tokyo

TOKYO, Aug 09: A magnitude-5.3 earthquake hit Tokyo and eastern parts of Japan on Friday evening, the government said, a day after it issued the first-ever advisory about the risk of a huge earthquake in the west of the country. Although damage to the areas closest to the epicentre was not immediately clear, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said the government had not received any reports of major damage, speaking at his Tokyo office shortly after the quake. — Reuters

Turkey bus crash kills 9, injures 26

ANKARA, Aug 09: A bus crashed through a highway bridge near Ankara early Friday, killing nine people and injuring 26, the governor of Turkey's capital region said. The accident occurred at 5:00 am (0200 GMT), the TRT public television channel said. It was travelling from Eskisehir, a city west of Ankara. Ankara region governor Vasip Sahin said preliminary information suggested the driver had fallen asleep as there were no indications he had tried to brake. — AFP

Venezuela blocking social media

platform X for 10 days: Maduro

CARACAS, Aug 09: Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, who has claimed reelection following a disputed vote, said Thursday that social media platform X would be blocked in the country for 10 days. The state agency in charge of telecommunications will "remove the social network X, formerly known as Twitter, from circulation in Venezuela for 10 days," Maduro said. — AFP
