Most media organisations optimistic about

generative AI, says survey

URUMQI, Oct 14: The majority of media organizations around the world maintain an optimistic outlook on generative artificial intelligence (AI) despite the controversies and concerns it has sparked, according to a recent survey by the think tank under Xinhua News Agency. The survey is part of the "Responsibility and Mission of News Media in AI Era" report, which was released on Monday during the sixth World Media Summit in Urumqi, the capital of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. According to its findings, 66 percent of respondents expressed a positive view of generative AI, with 20.3 percent agreeing highly and 45.7 percent agreeing somewhat that the opportunities brought by generative AI outweigh the challenges. --Xinhua

Colombo closes schools as floods hammer

COLOMBO, Oct 14: Sri Lanka closed schools in the capital Colombo and suburbs on Monday as heavy rains triggered floods in many parts of the island nation. Heavy downpours over the weekend have wreaked havoc in many parts of the country, flooding homes, fields and roads. Three people drowned, while some 134,000 people have been affected by flooding, according to the country's Disaster Management Centre. The center said rains and floods have damaged 240 houses and nearly 7,000 people have been evacuated. — AP

Man with guns held near Trump rally

LOS ANGELES, Oct 14: A man in illegal possession of a shotgun and a loaded handgun was arrested at an intersection near Donald Trump's rally in Coachella, California, on Saturday, police said. The 49-year-old suspect, Vem Miller, was driving a black SUV when he was stopped at a security checkpoint by deputies, who located the two firearms and a "high-capacity magazine". Mr Miller was then taken into custody "without incident", the Riverside County Sheriff's office said. He was later released and told US media he was a Trump supporter who was not planning to harm the Republican presidential candidate. — BBC
