Biden gives son 'unconditional' pardon

NEW YORK, Dec 02 : US President Joe Biden has issued an official pardon for his son Hunter, who was facing sentencing for two criminal cases, despite previously ruling it out. In a statement, the president said his son had been "singled out" and called his cases "a miscarriage of justice". Hunter Biden pleaded guilty to tax charges earlier in September, and was found guilty of being an illegal drug user in possession of a gun in June - becoming the first child of a sitting president to be a convicted of a crime. Reacting to the pardon, President-elect Donald Trump said: "Does the Pardon given by Joe to Hunter include the [6 January] Hostages, who have now been imprisoned for years? Such an abuse and miscarriage of Justice!" — BBC

Israeli drone hits post in east Lebanon

BEIRUT, Dec 02: Lebanon's army said an Israeli drone strike wounded one of its soldiers in the eastern region of Hermel on Monday, the latest such raid since an Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire last week. "An enemy drone struck an army bulldozer at a position, injuring one soldier," the army said, five days after a ceasefire ended more than a year of war between Israel and Lebanon's Hezbollah armed group. — AFP

Cyclone Fengal toll hits 20 in South Asia

COLOMBO, Dec 02: The death toll from Cyclone Fengal's fierce push through Sri Lanka and southern India reached 20 on Monday as downpours and flooding followed the storm's wake after its winds calmed. Fengal made landfall in India's Tamil Nadu state on Saturday, bringing the highest 24-hour rainfall seen in 30 years to nearby Puducherry, before weakening to a normal low pressure weather system by Monday morning. More deaths were reported on Sri Lanka after Fengal skirted the island nation on Friday bringing intense rains that triggered landslides. — AFP

Russian drone kills one in W Ukraine

KYIV, Dec 02: A Russian drone barrage overnight killed one person and wounded three others in the western Ukrainian city of Ternopil, authorities said Monday, in Moscow's latest aerial bombardment on Ukraine. The warring countries have escalated cross-border drone and missile attacks in recent weeks and the Kremlin's latest barrage came as German Chancellor Olaf Scholz arrived in Kyiv to reaffirm Berlin's support for Ukraine. "A 45-year-old man died as a result of the attack. His wife and two other residents of the building were taken to hospital," the national police service said. The statement added that a fire had broken out at the scene leaving some 20 apartments had damaged, and that a nearby educational facility was also damaged. — AFP

Two dead in attack on Sudan camp

PORT SUDAN, Dec 02: At least two people were killed when Sudan's paramilitary Rapid Support Forces attacked a camp for displaced people in the North Darfur region, activists said on Monday. The Zamzam camp, south of the regional capital El-Fasher, was hit by heavy rocket and artillery fire from the RSF on Sunday morning, said the local resistance committee in El-Fasher. The "indiscriminate" attack killed at least two people and wounded a dozen others, said the committee, one of hundreds of volunteer groups coordinating aid in Sudan. — AFP
