Plane with 80 people on board flips
at Toronto airport: 18 injured
TORONTO, Feb 18: A Delta Air Lines jet with 80 people onboard crash-landed Monday at Toronto's main airport, officials said, flipping upside down and leaving at least 18 people injured but causing no deaths. Endeavor Air Flight 4819 with 76 passengers and four crew was landing in the afternoon in Canada's largest metropolis, having flown from Minneapolis in the US state of Minnesota, the airline said. No explanation of the cause of the accident, or how the plane ended up flipped with its wings clipped, has been provided. —AFP
Rio swelters in scorching heatwave
RIO DE JANEIRO, Feb 18: Rio de Janeiro residents and tourists baked Monday in scorching temperatures as the city's crowded pre-Carnival street parties swung into full gear. The municipality's Rio Alert system recorded 44 degrees Celsius (111 degrees Fahrenheit) in the west of the city-the highest temperature on record since 2014. The previous record was 43.8 in November 2023 -- the day after a Taylor Swift fan died from heat exhaustion during her concert in the city. "We are expecting the hottest summer in recent years," Rio's health secretary Daniel Soranz said.—AFP
Mexico announces big meth seizure
MEXICO CITY, Feb 18: Mexico announced Monday the seizure of 200 kilos (440 pounds) of methamphetamine in a cartel heartland, as it comes under mounting pressure from US President Donald Trump to tackle drug trafficking. The discovery was made during a weekend operation to dismantle illegal drug laboratories in the northwestern state of Sinaloa, a government statement said. The value of the drugs seized was nearly $40 million, it said. —AFP
