MERU, Mar 20 (AFP): Charles Kibaki Muchiri traced the water trickling across the surface of the Lewis Glacier with his fingers, illustrating how quickly climate change is melting the huge ice blocks off of Africa's second-highest mountain. For nearly 25 years, the affable 50-year-old guide has been taking hikers to the peaks of Mount Kenya, nearly 5,000 metres (16,400 feet) above sea level, and observing their transformation from a landscape of snow and ice, to brown rock. — AFP
Protests over Istanbul mayor's detention
ISTANBUL, Mar 20: Thousands of Turks were expected to ramp up protests on Thursday over what they called the undemocratic detention of Istanbul's mayor Ekrem Imamoglu despite a ban on gatherings, police barricades and dozens of detentions over social media posts. Imamoglu, President Tayyip Erdogan's main political rival, was taken in on Wednesday facing charges of graft and aiding a terrorist group, a move that the opposition condemned as a "coup attempt" and that sparked an initial round of demonstrations. — Reuters
Four Canadians executed in China
OTTAWA, Mar 20: Canada's Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said Wednesday that China had executed four Canadian citizens in recent weeks, defying pleas for leniency from Ottawa. "We strongly condemn the executions that did happen against Canadians in China," Joly told reporters in Ottawa. She said she was unable to discuss details of the case due to privacy requests from the affected families. China defended the executions in a statement sent to the Globe and Mail newspaper, which indicated the Canadians had been convicted over drug offenses. — AFP
Taliban foreign minister meets US spl envoy
KABUL, Mar 20: The Taliban administration's foreign minister met US Special Envoy for Hostage Affairs Adam Boehler on Thursday and discussed the release of prisoners, an Afghan foreign ministry statement said. "During this meeting, discussions were held on Afghanistan-US bilateral relations, the release of prisoners, and the provision of consular services to Afghans in the United States," the statement said. —Reuters
