in Russia's Kursk region
MOSCOW, May 05: Ukrainian attacks killed three people in the Russian border region of Kursk on Monday, the regional governor said. Russia said last month it had fully retaken the western region, with help from North Korean troops, months after Kyiv captured dozens of villages there in a shock cross-border incursion. "A Ukrainian FPV-drone attacked a Lada Largus car... unfortunately as a result of the hit two women were killed," Kursk Governor Alexander Khinstein said in a post on Telegram. In a separate incident, a 53-year-old man was killed in his car when an explosive device was dropped onto it, Khinstein added. — AFP
19 killed after fuel tanker blast in Pakistan
QUETTA, May 05: The death toll from an oil tanker blast in southwest Pakistan jumped to 19, officials said Monday, a week after the incident. Crowds had gathered to douse the flames of the burning tanker after it pulled over near a market, when it exploded. More than 40 people were injured, many of them transported to the mega city of Karachi for treatment. "The death toll climbs to 19," local police official Muhammad Hasan Mengal told AFP. The incident happened on April 28 in Noshki, a district of Balochistan province. — AFP
Trump may meet with Putin in mid-May
WASHINGTON, May 05: US President Donald Trump said that he would think about a potential meeting with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Saudi Arabia during his visit to the kingdom in mid-May. Reporters asked the US leader if he intended to meet with his Russian counterpart during his planned trip. "I don't know, we have to think about it. I have not thought about it," Trump replied. "We'll be leaving for Saudi Arabia pretty soon," the US leader added. Earlier, US State Department Spokeswoman Tammy Bruce said that communication between the leaders of Russia and the United States is necessary in the issue of resolving the Ukrainian crisis. —TASS
Belgian mother, son die in Jordan floods
AMMAN, May 05: Jordanian rescue teams have recovered the bodies of a Belgian tourist and her son who went missing during flooding in the south of the kingdom, authorities said Monday. Rescue teams found "the bodies of a woman and her son, both Belgian nationals, who had been missing after flooding in the Shubak region", about 200 kilometres (125 miles) south of Amman, said a statement from the General Security Directorate. — AFP
Cocaine found in Norway banana boxes
OSLO, May 05: Employees at a Norwegian fruit distributor had their eyes peeled when they discovered a packet of cocaine in a box of bananas, alerting customs officials who found a stash of 147 kilos, they said Monday. The haul, found in nine boxes of bananas on April 3, is believed to have a street value of 170 million kroner ($16.4 million) and is the biggest in the Scandinavian country since 2023, when a total of 2.3 tonnes were found, Norwegian Customs said in a statement. — AFP
