12 dead, 4 missing after bridge collapses in China
BEIJING, Aug 22: Twelve people were killed and four are missing after part of a bridge under construction collapsed Friday in northwest China, state media reported. A video published by state broadcaster CCTV showed the middle of the bridge's arch section suddenly giving way and plunging into the waters of the Yellow River below. The cause was a steel cable failure, state news agency Xinhua said. The People's Daily newspaper said 15 workers and a project manager were on-site at the time. Twelve people have been confirmed dead and four people are still missing, CCTV reported. — AFP
7.5 magnitude earthquake in the Chilean Antarctic
SANTIAGO, Aug 22: A 7.5 magnitude earthquake rattled the Chilean Antarctic region and the southern Drake Passage on Thursday, the US Geological Survey said. There was no threat of a tsunami from the quake, which took place at 22:16 local time (0216 GMT), at a depth of 6.7 miles (10.8 kilometers), the survey said in a statement. — AFP

Deadly clashes as Iraqi Kurdistan opposition figure arrested
BAGHDAD, Aug 22: Three members of the security forces in Iraq's autonomous Kurdistan region were killed and 19 wounded during the arrest of an opposition figure on Friday, security officials said. Lahur Sheikh Jangi surrendered after barricading himself in a luxury hotel with his guards, said one official who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the subject. His brother Bolad was wounded and detained after hours of fighting that saw security forces use heavy artillery to dislodge them. — Reuters
