China's Xi meets Belarus leader

Lukashenko in Beijing

BEIJING, June 29: Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko, a key Russian ally, in Beijing on Monday, state media said. Xi hosted Lukashenko at the ornate Diaoyutai state guesthouse, Chinese state broadcaster CCTV said, without immediately providing further detail. Lukashenko, who has been in power since 1994, allowed Moscow to launch its 2022 Ukraine invasion through Belarus but has denied plans for direct involvement in the war. — AFP

Russian strikes kill seven across Ukraine

KYIV, June 29: Russian missile and drone strikes killed at least seven people on Monday and wounded more than two dozen others, Ukrainian officials said. Five people were killed in the central city of Dnipro, when a private business was hit by a Russian missile, while two were killed in an attack on a city bus in the southern city of Zaporizhzhia. — Arab News

BERLIN, June 29: Five people were shot and killed in a town in northern Germany on Monday, and police said they detained two individuals, including the suspected shooter. The motive for the incident in Stade, close to the port city of Hamburg, was not immediately clear, according to a police spokesperson. The role of the second individual in custody is currently unclear, a second police spokesperson told Reuters, adding that no other suspects were at large. — Reuters

Thai family mourn teen girl as Australian

PATTAYA (Thailand), June 29: The family of a 17-year-old Thai girl whose body was found in a suitcase in a resort city are "devastated," her stepmother said Monday, as authorities charged an Australian man for her murder. "I never imagined she would be gone this quickly," Orradee Bussarakham told AFP by phone. "We didn't get to say goodbye." Orradee and the girl's father, Thongchai Donhomla, were in Bangkok on Monday to collect the body, which was found near a railway track in the seaside resort city of Pattaya early on Saturday. — Arab News

One killed in shooting at site of California

World Cup fan zone

California, June 29: One person was killed and another seriously injured on Sunday in a shooting at a popular entertainment spot in San Jose, California, that has been hosting a World Cup "fan zone" screening matches, police said. There were no World Cup games being screened at the time of the shooting, with the only match of the day in the tournament finishing around 2:00 pm. — Reuters
